Restructuring DT Arik Armstead would be a mistake for the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have had a tumultuous start to the 2020 season, and one of the major issues that has yet to be addressed is the future of defensive tackle Arik Armstead. Armstead is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and the team has yet to make a decision on his future.

While Armstead has been a valuable member of the 49ers defensive line, it would be a mistake for the team to invest in him long-term. Armstead has had an up-and-down career in San Francisco, and his production has been inconsistent. He has only recorded double-digit sacks once in his career, and he has yet to prove that he can be a consistent force on the defensive line.

The 49ers also have a number of other needs that should take priority over re-signing Armstead. The team is in need of a pass rusher to replace DeForest Buckner, and they also need to address their lack of depth at wide receiver and in the secondary. Investing in Armstead would be a mistake when there are other areas of the team that need to be addressed.

In addition, the 49ers could save a significant amount of money by not re-signing Armstead. His current contract is worth $17 million per year, and the team could use that money to invest in other areas of the team. With the salary cap expected to decrease in 2021, the 49ers could use the money saved on Armstead to sign other players or extend contracts of key players.

Ultimately, the decision to re-sign Arik Armstead is up to the 49ers front office. While Armstead has been a valuable member of the team, it would be a mistake for the team to invest in him long-term. The team has other needs that should take priority, and they could save a significant amount of money by not re-signing Armstead.
